Mixed Media Art

As an artist I am infinitely curious, as a photographer I enjoy taking a simple object and turning it into something extraordinary to look at. I have a traditional photographic background, yet my imagery is anything but traditional. I have come to embrace the idea that all good photographs are self portraits; whether it is a person, animal, flower or landscape. I tend to see the flowers and fruits as a metaphor and symbols of life itself. My self-portraits give us a new perception of life passages and a view of spiritual growth

Paint and the Photogram

For the past year or two I have been adding texture and paint to my exploration of the photogram (a fundamental photographic process using emulsion paper and organic elements)Before the textures of the image were limited to forms and tones within the emulsion but now the surface has become rich with multiple layered qualities. As I worked with objects from the different seasons it became obvious that I was also making a study of the color green; the yellow greens in spring, the blue greens in summer, the brown greens of fall, and the muted greens in winter.  With subtle changes green is a constant in all seasons. ;Green is a color that is tranquil and refreshing to look at and offers psychological sense of renewal and harmony

Photograms

For many years I have been exploring the art of the photogram. The photogram is a photographic image made by placing objects directly on light sensitive paper without camera, film, enlargers or computers. Historically the photogram preceded the camera and film. These camera-less images explore the elements of light, time and color: the fundamentals of photography.

Artist Books

Making these one of a kind, photo alternative series images has led to my interest in artists books as a way to share my views. The book is a natural extension of my sequential photography. Expanding the images into sculptural and movable books provides a unique method to display photographic art.

Public Art Projects

I have a fascinationfor taking the photograph beyond the two dimensional page. This intrigue has encouraged me to place my original imagery in several a public art settings. I am most pleased to be included in three public art projects in Lexington: Art in Motion contemporary art; bus shelter (3 street and Elm Tree Lane), Lexington's LegacyTrail (Coalstream trail head; and LexTran's display TransLucent located in the downtown transit center

De-constructed photographic reliefs

With my camera I carefully study and take many, many individual close-ups of a solitary subject to extract its essence and beauty. The subject may be lit with studio lighting or captured “in-situ”. Chosen views are enlarged and then re-assembled and layered on top of one another to create a dynamic three dimensional view of the original object. The results are formal “cubist” abstractions of an organic form. The final images range from 12’x12”x2” to 24”x36”x4”and framed in a black metal shadow box frame with conservation glass.
